Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft and one of the richest people in the world, has made a significant shift in his longstanding detachment from politics by donating approximately 50 million dollars to a nonprofit organization supporting U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign. According to three sources familiar with the matter, this major donation was intended to be kept confidential, The New York Times reported.
Although Gates has not publicly endorsed Harris, this donation marks a significant departure from the famous businessman’s traditional political neutrality.
In private discussions with those close to him, Gates expressed concerns about the potential consequences of a second term for Donald Trump. However, he emphasized that he could work with both candidates, while particularly praising the Biden-Harris administration’s efforts on climate change.
The donation was reportedly made to the nonprofit arm of Future Forward, the primary external fundraising group supporting Harris. Since the organization operates under 501(c)(4) status, it is not required to disclose its donors, meaning Gates’ contribution will not appear in any official records.
In a statement to The New York Times, Gates did not directly confirm the donation but highlighted the significance of this election, stating: “I support candidates who show a clear commitment to improving healthcare, reducing poverty, and combating climate change. I have a history of working with leaders from across the political spectrum, but this election is unprecedented in its importance, both for Americans and the most vulnerable people around the world.”
